William Shatner Becomes Oldest Man In Space

Star Trek legend William Shatner bravely went into space on Wednesday (13/10). He became the oldest person to perform such a feat.

The 10-minute journey begins at the Texas launch site of aerospace company Blue Origin on Wednesday (13/10). 90-year-old Shatner and three of his crew blasted into space aboard a New Shepard rocket.

“I’m so full of emotion about what just happened”

Minutes later, the capsule crossed the Karman line 62 miles above Earth, a place widely regarded as the edge of space. Passengers experience the thrill of several minutes of weightlessness while getting a stunning view of the Earth – before returning safely to Earth.

Blue Origin posted the first footage showing Shatner and his fellow passengers at the summit, 66.5 miles above Earth’s surface. As he gazed out of one of the capsule windows at the planet below, Shatner marveled at the incredible sight, saying: “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe this.”

As he exits the capsule at the end of a sub-orbital flight, Shatner meets Amazon founder and Blue Origin boss—and Star Trek fan—Jeff Bezos.

“I’m so full of emotion about what just happened,” Shatner said after exiting the capsule.

“Excellent, extraordinary. It’s much bigger than me and life. It has nothing to do with the little green man and the blue ball. It has to do with magnitude and speed and suddenly life and death,” said Shatner.

Prior to the historic flight, Shatner admitted he was a little scared at the prospect of riding a rocket into space, though also added that he was excited about the idea. The actor took the opportunity to go into space after Bezos offered him the chance to go on his own sub-orbital flight on the same rocket in July.

Blue Origin is now planning to launch a space tourism service with regular launches for customers.
