The Danish national team became the third team to ensure a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after beating Austria 1-0 on Wednesday (13/10). Denmark is able to maintain a perfect record in the group stage with eight consecutive wins.
Joakim Maehle’s lone goal in the 53rd minute at Parken Stadium, made the Danes the only team with a perfect record and yet to concede in Group F of European qualifying with 27-0.
Denmark started World Cup qualifiers without star player Christian Eriksen, who is recovering after collapsing during Euro 2020 with a heart problem. However, Denmark at that time was still able to reach the semifinals of Euro 2020.
“You can only dream about things like this. This is something very big for the team, for Danish football and for the Danish people,” said Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, quoted from UEFA’s official website.
Other countries that previously qualified for the 2022 World Cup are Germany and host Qatar.
Germany became the first team to qualify for the 2020 World Cup apart from the hosts, after beating North Macedonia 4-0. Timo Werner’s brace and goals from Kai Haverzt and Jamal Musiala were enough to ensure Germany top Group J.
