Many visitors are unaware that Niagara Falls is actually a state park and is the oldest park in the country. Niagara Falls Park was founded in 1885 as the Niagara reservation. The State Park property covers about 400 acres, more than a quarter of which is under water.

There is no general entrance fee for the park, which is clean, safe and well maintained, always open (365 days a year, 24 hours a day). Visitors can walk and see the waterfall for free.

However, there are fees for popular attractions such as the fog helper boat tour, Cave of the Winds, Niagara Aquarium, Niagara Canyon Discovery Center, Niagara Adventure Theater, and Park trolleys.

The waterfall was formed about 12,000 years ago at the close of the last Ice Age. The power of the waterfall is capable of generating more than 2 million kilowatts of electricity that power homes and businesses in the US and Canada.

Electricity was first sold as a commodity in Niagara Falls. In 1896, Nikola Tesla, a famous electrical engineer and the name of the electric car company, transmitted power from a waterfall about 20 miles south to Buffalo.
