Haiti President Jovenel Moise Killed At His Home

Haiti President Jovenel Moise was killed in an attack on his home in the nation’s capital, according to the Caribbean nation’s interim prime minister.

Claude Joseph said the president’s house in Port-au-Prince was raided by unidentified gunmen at 01.00 local time on Wednesday (7/7/2021).

“Meanwhile, Haiti’s First Lady Martine Moise is hospitalized after the attack survived the attack,” said PM Claude Joseph, quoted from the AP website, Wednesday (7/7/2021).

It was not explained in detail about the attack that led to Moise’s death. In his statement, Joseph only said that 53-year-old Moise was killed in an attack orchestrated by a group of people.

Previously, the country of more than 11 million people was increasingly unstable and claimed to be dissatisfied under Moise’s leadership. “Democracy and republic will win,” Joseph said in a statement from his office.

Moise’s tenure has been difficult as he faces corruption charges and is challenged by a wave of often violent anti-government protests.
Haiti’s economic, political and social woes have been further chaotic recently, with gang violence rising sharply in the capital Port-au-Prince.

Inflation is soaring and food and fuel are scarce in a country where 60% of the population earns less than $2 a day.
These problems come as Haiti is still recovering from the devastating 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew that hit in 2016.
