French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday (15/9) said French military forces had killed the leader of ISIS in the Sahel, Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi. Macron said French troops had achieved great success in the fight against terrorism.
“This is another great success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel,” Macron said without specifying the location of the French troops’ operations.
Sahrawi is the historic leader of ISIS in the Sahel region of West Africa. The Sahrawi group targeted US soldiers in a deadly attack in 2017.
Macron’s office said in August 2020 Sahrawi personally ordered the killing of six French charity workers and their driver from Niger. In July Macron said France would soon rebuild its strength in the Sahel.
France is at the forefront of the fight against ISIS in the Sahel. The French operation and political turmoil, especially in Mali, frustrated Paris. France later halved its military presence in the region.
