The latest film, Halloween Kills, is slated for release on October 15, 2021. Halloween actress Jamie Lee Curtis discusses what made the work so popular with audiences even though it’s been 40 years since the first film appeared. Curtis starred in the original film and its sequels, Halloween 2, Halloween: H20, and Halloween: Resurrection as the character Laurie Strode.
In an interview with Variety, Curtis was asked why audiences are still interested in Halloween and Strode Laure’s fight against Myers. According to him, Halloween director and writer John Carpenter and co-writer Debra Hill capitalized on the idea of pure good versus pure evil, with Laurie and Michael representing each idea.
Curtis said the simplicity of the idea was acceptable to many. Because it is something that everyone strives for.
“That’s a million-dollar question. A hundred-million-dollar question. There’s something John Carpenter and Debra Hill created about pure evil and pure good,” Curtis said.
He said Carpenter and Hill took advantage of metaphors that have been worked out through opera, theater, books, films since the beginning of people using words. They emphasize the idea of evil and good.
“When Irwin Yablans the producers went to John and said, ‘This guy, Moustapha Akkad, is going to give you $300,000 to make a baby sitter slasher. It was Irwin who said, ‘I think you should arrange it on Halloween night.’ From there, the idea of pure evil and the most common representation of good everywhere.”
The theme, he said, never dies. It is an ongoing theme that people struggle with every day in every aspect of life.
He returned to the franchise for Halloween in 2018. The film is a reboot that repeats the previous sequel and takes place after the first film.
Halloween 2018 finds Laurie still traumatized by the events of the 1978 slasher film and living in fear of Michael Myers. This fear alienates Laurie from her family, including her daughter, played by Judy Greer.
When Myers escapes from Smith’s Grove Psychiatric Hospital and begins a new assassination, Laurie prepares to face him in the final battle to end her terror. As shown in recent footage at CinemaCon, their fight will continue into this year’s Halloween Kills.
Michael Myers’ battle with Laurie has been explored in various films, such as Halloween 2, Halloween: H20, Halloween: Resurrection, and the 2007 Rob Zombie remake and sequel. The 2018 reboot saw Laurie take up arms to personally end Myers, as seen in a recently deleted scene.
The film’s ending sees Laurie, her daughter, and her granddaughter leaving trapped Myers to die in her burning house. However, as Jamie Lee Curtis puts it, the fight never dies and, as the first trailer for Halloween Kills shows.
Halloween Kills is scheduled to be released on October 15, 2021. Curtis, Judie Greer, Andi Matichak, and James Jude Courtney will return as Laurie, daughter Karen Nelson, grandson Allyson Nelson, and Michael Myers, respectively.
With Myers returning once again, audiences are wondering where this film will take its character. Courtney said the trailer was just the tip of the iceberg and audiences had more to see.
Meanwhile, Halloween Ends is slated for release on October 14, 2022. Viewers can only guess where Laurie and Michael’s struggle for good and evil will lead before Halloween’s future is explained.
