Stanislav Cherchesov, the head of Russia’s national football team, has been sacked after guiding the Russian national team only to the bottom of Group B for Euro 2020, Russian football’s governing body RFS said. Prior to the tournament, Russian football officials said they wanted to enter the knockout stages.
This target for the knockout stages is based on their success at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. At that time Russia wowed fans after the first time the quarter-finals.
But their performance at Euro 2020 was below expectations. Russia suffered two major defeats and won narrowly despite appearing more at home. The unfavorable results sparked criticism from fans as well as observers. It also urges sports officials to evaluate team performance and make appropriate changes to the coaching staff.

Alexander Dyukov, President of the RFS, reported that his party has decided to terminate Cherchesov’s contract, which has been in charge since August 2016. “The Russian Football Union will start looking for candidates for the position of head coach in order to prepare the team for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers,” Dyukov said.
After Russia lost 4-1 to Denmark in their final group stage match, Cherchesov said his players lacked experience in major tournaments and made too many defensive blunders.
The experienced 57-year-old former national team goalkeeper was hailed as a national hero at the 2018 World Cup after guiding Russia to its all-time greatest.
